Công ty mẹ là công ty khi đáp ứng một trong  các điều kiện như: Nắm giữ trên 50 phần trăm tổng số vốn điều lệ hoặc tổng cổ phần phổ thông trong công ty cổ phần đó; có quyền quyết đinh bổ nhiệm thành viên Hội đồng quản trị, Giám đốc hoặc Tổng; có thể sửa đổi, bổ sung Điều lệ của công ty.

Công ty mẹ tiếng Anh là Parent Company.

Công ty mẹ tiếng Anh có thể định nghĩa là: Parent company is a company when it meets one of the following conditions: Holds more than 50 percent of the total charter capital or the total common shares in that joint stock company; have the right to decide on the appointment of members of the Board of Directors, Director or General; may amend and supplement the company’s charter.
